Malkin and Gonchar will join team Russia

Ovechkin scores game winning goal vs Belarus.

Malkin and Gonchar will join team Russia. Datsyuk will be in Germany today is in Germany already.

Crosby refused to help his country and won't join team Canada. Cry Crosby cry. In other news he finally moved out of Mario's basement.

Tretiak's interview to Sovetsky Sport:

Varlamov is our #1 goalkeeper. He will play against Germany tomorrow. We offered him to play the first game vs Slovakia, but he wanted to train more. He will skip the game vs. Denmark for sure, but we haven't decided who will play in that game, Koshechkin or Eremenko.
According to Pavel Lysenkov, Malkin is now in Toronto where he is receiving schengen visa. Sergei Gonchar already has schengen visa and can join team Russia tomorrow.

Wow, the Russian Roster is pretty much the Olympic Roster. They should absolutely steamroll the competition, since none of the other Countries have their best of the best.

Crosby refused? That's understandable. This tournament worthless and the Russians are gonna destroy everybody. Why finish the season on an other bad note?

That was an unnecessary and childish dig at Crosby. I think he made a wise decision to rest and I wish the Russians knew when to say no to their country too. It has been a more difficult than usual NHL season for many.

All the other countries that are heavily represented in the NHL had people say no. Maybe those countries have players who are smarter about their health.

@ 1st Anonymous,

Although I agree with most of what you posted, the WC are uber important to Europeans and to a slightly lesser extent, Canada. It just doesn't have resonance for Americans.

Also, it is the event that is used to rank countries. At the moment, the USA team could be embarassed by dropping to Division I status instead of the Top Division unless they win their relegation games.

How about Ovechkin and his season? He had a brutal season. He had humiliating loss at Olympics, everything went down the toilet for him, but he didn't refuse when his country asked him. Personally I didn't want Ovi to go to Germany.

Crosby? I don't think he is that patriotic. Refusing to play for his country does say something about him.

See? I am not the only one...

TSN.CA: Judging from the early feedback in 'Your Calls' on the story, it would appear that many hockey fans in this country are extremely upset by the news that Sidney Crosby has declined an offer to join Canada in Germany for the IIHF World Championship.

I applaud Ovie for agreeing to play for Russia despite all the heartbreak and disappointments he endured this past year. It takes a lot of guts and courage to put your reputation on the line again, so obviously he enjoys playing hockey so much, and for his country, he's willing to take more risks.

As for Sidney Crosby, he showed what a complainer he is when things don't go his way, as evidenced by his reaction to the Pens ouster by the Canadiens. And IMO his refusal to represent Canada appears a little self-serving. He doesn't seem as patriotic as Ovie or as willing to take risks for that matter.

IMO this is yet another reason why I prefer Ovie to Sid and why I think the Great 8 is a better PLAYER than Crosby is.

Yeah. Crosby played in the last two Stanley Cup finals and won Gold for Canada in the Olympics. He deserves some time off. If Ovechkin ever achieves anything other than being a douchebag he will deserve some time off too.

Crysby tired, poor baby. He needs to rest, who cares about Canada? The whiny prick needs to be sent to Afghanistan, for good.
